WAITING lists for the Subaru Forester look like being eased with the news that the factory in Japan will produce a special run of 650 for Australia in November.

Subaru Australia managing director, Mr Trevor Amery, said the company had clearly been caught short by the runaway demand for the new four-wheel drive.

"I have had dealers ringing me and saying they have never seen such a reaction to a new-model launch in their 30 years in the industry," he said.

Since its Australian launch in mid-August, Subaru has sold 760 Foresters compared with the initial target of 225 units a month.

Mr Amery said although the Forester had been selling strongly in all markets, Fuji Heavy Industries had accepted urgent requests for more vehicles from Australia, the United States and Germany.

"Everything we have landed has been sold. We are hopeful that the cars the factory is building will alleviate the backlog," he said.
