Subaru was on a sales winner from the moment it launched the original Forester compact all-wheel-drive wagon in 1997.

Its second generation, launched in July 2002, was a case of evolution, not revolution.

The most important change was replacing the 2.0-litre boxer four-cylinder with a 2.5-litre version. Output rose from 92 kW to 112 kW and 184 Nm to 223 Nm. A five-speed manual (with low-range gearing) and optional four-speed automatic remained the transmission choices.

Standard equipment on the base X included air-conditioning, CD-audio, cruise control, dual front airbags, remote central locking and a limited-slip rear differential. The XS added climate control, front foglights, a six-stacker CD, alloy wheels and self-levelling suspension. The XS Luxury included dual front-side airbags, leather trim and a sunroof.

The X cost $30,990, the XS $34,490 and XS Luxury $37,990. The auto added $2000.

The sporty XT arrived in 2003. Priced from $39,490, it was powered by a 155 kW/320 Nm, turbocharged, 2.5-litre engine. The $42,990 XT Luxury Pack added side airbags, a large sunroof and leather trim.

From July 2004, side airbags became standard, ensuring a five-star NCAP rating for all Foresters, while 2005 saw refinements to major components.

The third-generation Forester arrives in April.

OUR PICK

Forester XS delivers a little bit of luxury with affordable good sense. The lack of stability or traction control is a safety blot. -- BRUCE NEWTON
